Kazbegi — officially Stepantsminda — is the most popular mountain destination in Georgia, and for good reason. The sight of Gergeti Trinity Church floating above the clouds with Mount Kazbek towering behind it is one of the most photographed scenes in the Caucasus. But timing matters enormously. Visit too early and the roads may be closed. Visit in peak summer and you will share the trails with dense crowds.

May and June sit in the sweet spot: the Georgian Military Highway is open, the meadows are at their most vibrant, and the tourist numbers are manageable. Here is everything you need to plan a trip to Kazbegi during these two months.

Kazbegi Weather in May

May in Kazbegi is spring transitioning into early summer. Expect variable weather that can shift quickly.

Temperatures: Daytime temperatures in Stepantsminda range from 10°C to 18°C. At the elevation of Gergeti Trinity Church (2,170 meters), temperatures are typically 5°C–12°C. Early May mornings can dip near freezing at higher elevations.

Precipitation: May sees moderate rainfall, often in the form of brief afternoon showers. Fog and low clouds are common in the morning, sometimes obscuring the mountain views — but these often lift by midday, revealing spectacular scenery.

Snow: The main road and the trail to Gergeti are generally snow-free by early May. However, higher elevations above 3,000 meters still have significant snowpack. The summit of Mount Kazbek (5,047 meters) is permanently glaciated.

Daylight: Expect about 14.5 hours of daylight, giving you plenty of time for hikes and exploration.

Kazbegi Weather in June

June brings more stable and warmer conditions. This is when Kazbegi truly opens up for the season.

Temperatures: Daytime temperatures in Stepantsminda reach 15°C–22°C. At Gergeti Church elevation, expect 10°C–17°C. Nights remain cool at 8°C–12°C.

Precipitation: June has slightly less rain than May, though afternoon thunderstorms can develop, especially in the mountains. Always carry a waterproof layer.

Wildflowers: This is the peak wildflower season. The meadows between Stepantsminda and Gergeti Trinity Church are covered in a carpet of yellow, purple, and white blossoms. It is the single best time for photography.

Visibility: Mountain views are generally clearer and more consistent in June than in May, with fewer foggy mornings.

The Drive: Georgian Military Highway in Spring

The road from Tbilisi to Kazbegi follows the legendary Georgian Military Highway, a 150-kilometer route that climbs over the Cross Pass at 2,379 meters. In May and June, this drive is one of the highlights of any Georgia trip.

Key Stops Along the Way

Ananuri Fortress (70 km from Tbilisi): A medieval fortress complex on the banks of the Jinvali Reservoir. The turquoise water against the fortress walls makes for a stunning photo stop. In May, the surrounding hills are bright green.

Gudauri Viewpoint: At the Cross Pass, you will find the Russia–Georgia Friendship Monument (Arch of Friendship), a Soviet-era mosaic panorama overlooking the Devil's Valley. On clear days, the views extend for dozens of kilometers in every direction.

Sno Valley: Just before Stepantsminda, the Sno Valley offers a quieter, less-visited landscape with a medieval watchtower and views of the surrounding peaks.

Road Conditions

The Georgian Military Highway is fully paved and well-maintained. In May and June, the road is reliably open. Occasional rockfalls or maintenance work can cause brief delays, but these are rare. The drive takes approximately 3 hours from Tbilisi without stops.

Hiking to Gergeti Trinity Church

The hike to Gergeti Trinity Church is the main attraction and is accessible throughout May and June.

The Trail

Distance: Approximately 6 km round trip from Stepantsminda Elevation gain: About 500 meters Duration: 1.5–2 hours up, 1–1.5 hours down Difficulty: Moderate. The trail is steep in places but does not require technical skills.

The path starts from the village and winds through forests and meadows before emerging at the church plateau. In May, the lower sections may be muddy after rain. In June, conditions are drier.

By 4x4

For those who prefer not to hike, 4x4 vehicles can drive up a rough track to the church. This is available year-round when conditions allow and costs approximately 50–80 GEL for a round trip from Stepantsminda. Many organized tours include this option.

What to Expect at the Top

Gergeti Trinity Church (Tsminda Sameba) dates from the 14th century and sits at 2,170 meters. On a clear day, Mount Kazbek (5,047 meters) dominates the background. In May, clouds may partially obscure the peak in the morning but often clear by afternoon. In June, visibility is more consistent.

The church grounds are open and free to enter. Modest dress is expected (covered shoulders and knees). There is no entrance fee, but donations are welcome.

Beyond Gergeti: Other Activities in Kazbegi

Truso Valley

A less-visited gem accessible by a rough road from the Georgian Military Highway. The valley features mineral springs, travertine formations, and the dramatic Truso Gorge. In May, the river is running high, adding to the scenery. A half-day excursion by 4x4 or a full-day hike.

Juta Village and Chaukhi Pass

Located in a side valley, Juta is the starting point for the trek to Chaukhi Pass and the spectacular rock towers of the Chaukhi Massif. This hike is more challenging (6–8 hours round trip) and is best attempted in June when snow has cleared from the higher sections.

Gveleti Waterfalls

Getting to Kazbegi

By tour: The most popular and convenient option. Day tours from Tbilisi depart early morning and return by evening, covering the highlights of the Georgian Military Highway and Kazbegi in a single day. Both group and private tours are available.

By marshrutka (shared minibus): Departs from Tbilisi's Didube station roughly every 2 hours. The journey takes about 3.5 hours and costs around 15–20 GEL. Limited flexibility once you arrive.

By rental car: Gives maximum flexibility but requires confidence on mountain roads. The road is paved throughout, but traffic in the Tbilisi outskirts can be chaotic.

Where to Stay

If you want more than a day trip, Stepantsminda has a growing range of guesthouses and small hotels. Rooms range from 80 to 300 GEL per night. Booking in advance is recommended for May and June weekends, especially around Georgian Independence Day (May 26).
