Three days is enough time to get a genuine feel for Georgia - the ancient capital, the mountain scenery, and the wine country. It's not enough to see everything, but with the right structure, you'll leave with a clear picture of what this country is and a strong reason to come back for longer.

This itinerary is built around Tbilisi as your base. You sleep in the city each night, which keeps logistics simple, and take day trips to the two destinations that most consistently impress first-time visitors: Kazbegi to the north and Kakheti to the east.

Day 1 - Tbilisi: Old Town, Narikala and the Sulphur Baths

Spend your first day entirely in Tbilisi. The city rewards slow walking and gets better the more you look.

Start in the Old Town. The streets around Shardeni and Leselidze are the historic core - narrow, uneven, and lined with the carved wooden balconies that define Tbilisi's architecture. Walk uphill toward Narikala Fortress for the best views over the city and the Mtkvari River below. The cable car from Rike Park is the easiest way up and worth the few minutes it takes.

From Narikala, walk down through the Abanotubani district - Tbilisi's sulphur bath quarter. The city was reportedly founded here in the fifth century after hunters discovered natural hot springs. You can bathe in one of the private cabins for around 10 to 15 GEL per person per hour. It's a genuine Tbilisi experience and a practical way to recover from a long flight.

In the afternoon, walk Rustaveli Avenue and visit the Georgian National Museum if history interests you. The Gold Treasury collection alone is worth the entrance fee.

In the evening, eat in the Old Town. Order khinkali, khachapuri, and badrijani nigvzit. Drink the house wine. This is what Georgia tastes like.

Day 2 - Kazbegi: The Military Highway, Ananuri and Gergeti Trinity Church

Leave Tbilisi early - ideally by 8am. The Military Highway north to Kazbegi is one of the great drives in the Caucasus and you want time at the destination, not just the journey.

Ananuri Fortress

The first stop is around 70 kilometres from Tbilisi. A sixteenth-century castle complex sits at the edge of the Zhinvali Reservoir - the combination of medieval stonework and the blue-green water behind it is one of those views that appears in every Georgia travel photo for good reason. Allow 30 to 40 minutes here.

Gudauri and the Cross Pass

Continue north through Gudauri, Georgia's main ski resort, and up over the cross pass at 2,395 metres. On a clear day the views of the Greater Caucasus range from this point are extraordinary.

Gergeti Trinity Church

Kazbegi town - officially called Stepantsminda - sits in the valley below Mount Kazbegi (5,047m). The iconic view is Gergeti Trinity Church, a fourteenth-century church perched on a hill at 2,170 metres with the mountain directly behind it. You can hike to the church in around 90 minutes from the valley, or arrange a 4x4 transfer from the town.

Have lunch in Kazbegi town before returning to Tbilisi by early evening. The drive back takes around two and a half hours.

Day 3 - Kakheti: Wine, Sighnaghi and the Alazani Valley

Georgia's wine region is the right way to spend your third day. Kakheti is where Georgian winemaking began - 8,000 years ago, by current archaeological evidence - and where the country's best-known wines still come from.

Leave Tbilisi by 9am. The drive east takes around one and a half hours.

Winery Visit

Start at a winery. Kakheti has options at every level - from large commercial estates to small family operations where wine is still made in qvevri (clay vessels buried in the ground). Our Kakheti tours include wine tasting as a standard part of the itinerary.

Sighnaghi

Continue to Sighnaghi - a small walled town on a ridge above the valley with sweeping views across to the Caucasus range. The town is compact, walkable, and genuinely picturesque. Have lunch here before heading to Bodbe Monastery, a ninth-century complex where St. Nino - who brought Christianity to Georgia in the fourth century - is buried.

Return to Tbilisi by evening.

Practical Notes for This Itinerary

The most important logistical decision is transport. Kazbegi is not a destination where a first-time visitor should self-drive without mountain road experience. The section from Gudauri to the valley involves sustained steep gradients and narrow lanes - having a professional driver makes the day significantly more relaxed.

Our private tours cover both of these days as standard itineraries. You get a licensed English-speaking guide, a comfortable vehicle suited to the roads, and a flexible schedule that adjusts to your pace. Both tours depart from Tbilisi and return the same evening.

For Tbilisi itself, the Old Town is compact and easy to navigate independently.
