April is one of the two best months to visit Georgia. The winter crowds are gone, the summer heat has not yet arrived, and the country is in the middle of a brief, vivid spring that transforms the mountain landscapes and fills the wine region with blossom. If you are deciding when to book, April deserves serious consideration.
This guide covers the weather, the events, and what to actually do across Georgia's main regions in April 2026.
Weather in Georgia in April
Georgia is a geographically diverse country and April weather varies significantly by region. The broad picture is warm days, cool evenings, and occasional rain - particularly in western Georgia, which has a more subtropical climate than the east.
April in Tbilisi is mild and pleasant. Average daytime temperatures sit between 16 and 20 degrees Celsius, dropping to 8 to 12 degrees in the evening. Rain is possible but rarely persistent - showers tend to be short and the city dries quickly. Light layers and a compact umbrella are all you need.
The Kakheti wine region to the east of Tbilisi shares broadly similar temperatures. The landscape in April is at its most photogenic - vineyards just beginning to show new growth, almond and cherry blossom in the villages, and the Alazani Valley a deep, vivid green against the Caucasus backdrop.
April in the mountains is a different proposition. Kazbegi town is accessible and the valley is fully open, but the higher passes - including the road to Gergeti Trinity Church - may still have snow and ice in early April. By mid to late April conditions have generally improved significantly.
The Military Highway to Kazbegi is open year-round but requires care in early April. A professional driver who knows the road is strongly recommended at this time of year - conditions can change quickly and local knowledge matters.
Snow on the peaks in April is not a problem - it is an advantage. The combination of green valley, snow-capped Kazbegi mountain, and Gergeti Trinity Church is the classic Georgia image, and it is most reliably achieved in April and May before the snowline retreats to the summit.
Western Georgia in April is lush, warm, and occasionally wet. Temperatures in Kutaisi average 18 to 22 degrees during the day. The rainfall that makes western Georgia greener than the east also feeds the canyons - April is the peak season for Martvili and Okatse, with water levels at their highest and the canyon colours at their most intense.
Batumi in April is mild but not yet beach weather - sea temperatures are around 14 to 16 degrees. The city itself is pleasant to walk and the botanical garden just south of the city is exceptional in spring. If your trip combines Tbilisi and western Georgia with a coastal endpoint, Batumi in April is a comfortable and worthwhile addition.
April is one of the best months for the Kazbegi day trip from Tbilisi. The valley is green, the mountain is snow-capped, and the crowds of summer have not yet arrived. The hike to Gergeti Trinity Church is fully doable from mid-April onward in normal conditions - allow three hours round trip at a comfortable pace.
April in Kakheti is outstanding. The vineyards are just waking up after winter, the guesthouses are open and unhurried, and the wineries are in full operation. This is also the season for rtveli preparations - conversations with local winemakers in April often reveal more about Georgian wine culture than a summer visit when production is in full swing and schedules are busier.
As covered in the western Georgia guide - April is the peak season for both canyons. Book early for spring weekends, particularly in late April when Georgian domestic tourism also picks up.
The city is at its most comfortable in April. The open-air restaurants and cafe terraces on Shardeni Street and around Fabrika fill up in the evenings without the summer heat making them oppressive. The Botanical Garden above the Old Town - one of Tbilisi's underrated attractions - is particularly rewarding in spring when the terraced gardens are in full bloom.
Orthodox Easter falls in late April in 2026. In Georgia, where the Georgian Orthodox Church is a central part of national identity, Easter is the most significant religious and cultural event of the year.
The Easter midnight service at Sameba Cathedral in Tbilisi - Georgia's largest cathedral - draws thousands of worshippers and is one of the most atmospheric events in the Georgian calendar. Candles are lit from a central flame and passed through the congregation until the entire space is illuminated. Non-Orthodox visitors are welcome to observe.
In villages and smaller towns, Easter Sunday is marked by large family gatherings, outdoor supras, and the kind of hospitality that Georgia is known for. If you are in the country over Easter weekend, the experience of a Georgian Easter table - with its traditional dishes, toasts, and warmth - is something worth seeking out.
Practical note: expect higher accommodation prices and fuller bookings in the Easter weekend period. Book well in advance if your travel dates overlap with Orthodox Easter.
While Tbilisoba - Tbilisi's main city festival - takes place in October, April sees a number of smaller cultural events and open-air concerts in Tbilisi's parks and public spaces as the city opens up after winter. Check local listings closer to your travel dates for specific events.
April sees the beginning of the spring wine season in Kakheti, with several small producer events and open cellar days at family wineries in the Telavi and Sighnaghi areas. These are informal by nature - your guide will know which producers are worth visiting on a given weekend.
April Travel Tips for Georgia
Book accommodation early if traveling over Orthodox Easter weekend - this is the busiest domestic travel period of the spring.
Pack layers for Kazbegi. The valley can be warm at midday and cold by late afternoon, particularly if there is cloud cover.
Western Georgia roads to the canyons can be muddy after heavy rain in early April - a vehicle with reasonable clearance is preferable.
Tbilisi restaurant terraces open in April but evenings are still cool enough to need a jacket after 8pm.
April is shoulder season for international tourism, which means better availability and slightly lower prices than May or June for most accommodation.
