Georgia is a year-round destination, but the experience varies dramatically depending on when you visit. A May trip delivers green mountains and wildflowers; a September visit brings the festive grape harvest; a January trip means skiing in Gudauri and steaming sulfur baths in Tbilisi. Each month has its own character, its own advantages, and its own considerations.
This guide walks through every month of the year, helping you choose the perfect time for the Georgia trip you have in mind.
Spring (March–May): Warming temperatures, blooming landscapes, moderate crowds. Peak spring is May — widely considered the single best month to visit.
Summer (June–August): Hot in the lowlands, perfect in the mountains. Peak tourist season with the highest prices and most crowded attractions.
Autumn (September–November): Harvest season, wine festivals, golden landscapes. September and October rival May as the best months to visit.
Winter (December–February): Ski season, festive atmosphere, lowest prices. Cold in the mountains, mild in Tbilisi.
Weather: Cold across the country. Tbilisi averages 0°C–5°C; mountain areas well below freezing with heavy snow.
Best for: Skiing at Gudauri and Bakuriani. The slopes are at their best in January, with reliable snow cover and modern lift systems. Gudauri offers runs up to 3,300 meters with varied terrain for all levels.
Also good for: New Year celebrations (Georgia celebrates both January 1 and Georgian Christmas on January 7), sulfur baths in Tbilisi (especially enjoyable in cold weather), low-season hotel prices.
Considerations: Mountain roads may be temporarily closed by snow. The Georgian Military Highway to Kazbegi can close for periods. Shorter daylight hours (about 9 hours).
Weather: Still cold but occasionally showing early signs of spring in Tbilisi (5°C–8°C by late February). Mountain snow conditions remain excellent.
Best for: Skiing (often the best snow month), the Tbilisoba cultural events, Valentine's Day trips to Sighnaghi ("City of Love").
Considerations: Similar to January. Some mountain passes still closed. Fewer tourists mean quieter experiences but also fewer available tours.
Weather: Transition month. Tbilisi warms to 8°C–14°C. Early wildflowers in lowland areas. Mountains still have snow.
Best for: Affordable travel with improving weather. Tbilisi is pleasant for walking. Wine regions begin to green up. Early spring hiking in lower elevations.
Considerations: Weather is unpredictable — pack layers. Mountain roads beginning to open but conditions vary. Too early for high-altitude hiking.
Weather: Warming steadily. Tbilisi reaches 15°C–22°C. Kakheti is green and pleasant. Mountains thawing but higher passes still snow-covered.
Best for: Comfortable sightseeing with fewer crowds than summer. Easter celebrations (Georgian Orthodox Easter date varies). Tbilisi Old Town at its atmospheric best with spring blossoms. Kakheti wine tours in ideal temperatures.
Considerations: Some rain, particularly afternoon showers. Kazbegi accessible but higher trails may be muddy or snow-patched. Book tours as availability increases.
Weather: The sweet spot. Tbilisi 20°C–27°C. Mountains green with wildflowers. Kakheti warm and dry.
Best for: Everything. Mountain roads open, wildflower season at peak, all tours running at full capacity. Kazbegi at its most photogenic. Kakheti vineyards lush. Independence Day celebrations on May 26. Warm enough for outdoor dining everywhere.
Considerations: Tourism begins to pick up — book tours a few days ahead. Occasional rain. Mountain weather still variable above 3,000 meters.
Verdict: May is the single best month for a first visit to Georgia, offering ideal conditions for virtually every activity and destination.
Weather: Warm to hot. Tbilisi 25°C–32°C. Mountains comfortable (15°C–22°C in Kazbegi). Long daylight hours (about 15 hours).
Best for: Mountain hiking at its prime. Tusheti opens (road accessible from late May/early June). Svaneti trekking season begins. Beach season starts in Batumi. Wildflowers at peak in Kazbegi.
Considerations: Tourist numbers increase significantly. Hotels and popular tours fill up — advance booking essential. Hot in Tbilisi and lowland areas.
Weather: The hottest month. Tbilisi can reach 35°C–40°C. Mountains are at ideal temperatures (18°C–25°C in Kazbegi). Batumi and Black Sea coast warm (28°C–32°C, sea at 24°C–26°C).
Best for: Mountain destinations — Kazbegi, Svaneti, Tusheti, and Racha are at their peak. Beach vacations in Batumi and Kobuleti. Outdoor festivals and events.
Considerations: Peak tourist season — highest prices, most crowded. Tbilisi heat can be intense for walking. Book everything well in advance. Air conditioning important for accommodation.
Weather: Very similar to July. Hot in lowlands, ideal in mountains. Sea temperatures at their warmest.
Best for: Same mountain and beach activities as July. Late August begins the transition to harvest season in Kakheti.
Considerations: Still peak season. Many Georgians take vacations in August, adding domestic tourism to international crowds. Can feel very busy at popular sites.
Weather: Cooling gradually. Tbilisi 22°C–28°C. Mountains pleasant. Kakheti warm and golden.
Best for: The rtveli (grape harvest) in Kakheti — a festive, participatory experience. Wine festivals and harvest events. Excellent hiking weather with clearer skies than summer. Fewer crowds than July/August with nearly as good weather. Photography — the golden light on vineyards and mountains is extraordinary.
Considerations: Early September is still busy. Late September significantly quieter. Book Kakheti experiences in advance during harvest season.
Verdict: September rivals May as the best month to visit, with the added bonus of harvest season.
Weather: Autumn colors arriving. Tbilisi 15°C–22°C. Mountain areas cooling. Kakheti still pleasant.
Best for: Autumn foliage, particularly in Tusheti and mountain areas. Wine harvest continues in some regions. Comfortable temperatures for sightseeing. Hotel prices begin to drop.
Considerations: Some mountain roads begin to close (Tusheti road typically closes by late October). Shorter days. Variable weather — layers essential.
Weather: Cool and sometimes grey. Tbilisi 8°C–14°C. Mountains cold with potential early snow. Shorter days (about 10 hours of daylight).
Best for: Budget travel — lowest prices start. Tbilisi still comfortable for city exploration. Wine cellars and indoor experiences. Quiet, atmospheric visits to historical sites.
Considerations: Many outdoor activities limited by weather. Some tours run less frequently. Not ideal for mountain destinations. Pack warm layers and rain gear.
Weather: Cold. Tbilisi 2°C–8°C. Mountains snow-covered. Ski season begins in Gudauri (usually mid-December).
Best for: Christmas and New Year atmosphere. Skiing at Gudauri and Bakuriani (conditions improving through the month). Festive Tbilisi with lights and markets. Sulfur baths at their most appealing.
Considerations: Short days. Mountain roads may close. Some tourist services operate at reduced capacity. Book ski accommodation early for the holiday period.
